Healthy Ways to Enjoy Air Conditioning

Home air conditioning units have become one of the critical priorities in every home. If you’re going to beat the weather and make your home as enjoyable and comfortable as possible, you need to install an AC unit and establish the control in your home. Intense heats, especially in urban environments, can be tough to tolerate, so the air conditioning system can be a useful tool, but only if used correctly.

It’s necessary to take specific measures of precaution since air conditioning has been linked to various pathogens, most of which are benign but can end up being potentially dangerous. Here are several healthy ways you can enjoy your cooled home.

Avoid extreme temperature changes

One of the first considerations on your part should be to control the temperature with your AC unit and try to maintain a difference of no more than 5 to 8 degrees between indoors and outdoors. This is widely recommended as our bodies shouldn’t be exposed to temperature changes higher than 8 degrees. On the contrary, it can result in headaches and fatigue, nasal drip, sore throat, muscle cramps and dry eyes. If this discrepancy continues or increases, it can lead to serious respiratory issues and possibly a thermal shock. Therefore, it’s best to follow these guidelines to enjoy the perks of your AC thoroughly.

Keep away from cold drafts

Possibly the worst mistake you could make is to sleep with your AC blowing directly at you, just because you will end up with a very painful crick in the neck and a sore throat. Exposing your neck to cold air during sleep will make it stiff and lead to muscular cramping. If your home is not equipped with a central AC, you should place your AC unit in a room adjacent to the bedroom, such as the living room or the dining room. Keep the doors open at nighttime, and the fresh, cold air will keep coming in but not directly at you. If that is not an option, consider chilling the bedroom during the day, and then turning the unit off before bedtime.

A good rule of thumb is to set your thermostat at about 5 to 8 degrees lower than the outdoor temperature, and also use the aid of curtains to shade the sunny sides, ceiling fans, and portable fans to help circulate air in the room where you spend most of your time.
