Diagnosing and treatment of Ankle Sprain

At one time or another most of us have experienced a twisted ankle accompanied by swelling and pain. In case of extreme pain accompanied with swelling, you can be sure you have sprained it. There is a possibility of the ligaments in your ankle being either torn or stretched. In details, an ankle injury is getting the tough bands of tissue in your ankle being injured. This happens when you turn awkwardly or twist your ankle in an odd position. Ligaments have a particular range of boundaries and motion which lets them keep the stability of the joints. The boundaries being pushed is the cause of sprains. If you are suffering from any kind of ankle injuries, then you need to consult with the doctor, and you must also do some physiotherapy treatments.

Initial Treatment for Ankle Sprains:

Opting for some sort of relief is an essential requirement. This injury is excruciating and needs to be attended to on an immediate basis. Till the time you can contact a professional orthopedic you need to remember R.I.C.E. This is explained below.

  • R: Rest the Leg:

Stop the activity which has caused the injury.  If the patient can take help and sit down, it is better. You need to rest the ankle. Doctors advise on not putting any weight on the injured ankle for at least 48 hours. You can think of using crutches. Initially, a brace or probably a sprint is helpful. At this stage, you can do some small exercise prescribed by the physiotherapist.

  • I: Ice:

The ankle needs to be cooled to reduce the swelling and pain. You can think of using a bag of ice or even frozen peas, placing the same at the spot of injury. Make sure not to use ice straight on the injury as this can lead to a cold burn. This needs to be done immediately after the injury for a period of at least 20 minutes. Carry on this procedure for a minimum of 8 times in a day.

  • C: Compress:

The injured area needs to be compressed either with a bandage or an elastic wrap.  You can use a layer of padding and wrap this around the ankle. This should be from the toes right up to the knees. You should choose the ankle binder according to the size of your ankle, and in this regards, you can discuss with some medicine shops.

  • E: Elevation:

For limiting the swelling trying to elevate the injured ankle above your heart works well. Rest the ankle as much as possible and contact a doctor at the earliest. It is suggested that do not move your ankle and if you feel acute pain, then you can take some medicines also. But always take medications which are prescribed by your doctors.

Diagnosing Ankle Sprain:

A doctor examines the patient physically to determine the number of ligaments torn. The ankle is moved in different directions to find out the range of motion. X-rays are advised to rule out the possibility of a fracture. MRI is typically asked for if the doctor suspects serious injury to the bones or the ligaments. After MRI if the physician fined any ankle sprains then they will advise some regular exercise and medicines. It is a long-term treatment, and you should follow the doctor’s advice and maintain his/her checkup schedules.

Besides this, even a slight sprain can leave you unsteady for an extended period of time if you neglect to go to the doctor. Take the initial treatment but ensure you contact a well-reputed doctor as soon as possible. Being aware and taking the next step can help you avoid a sprain.
