How Cannabis Oil Helps To Kill Cancer Cells
If I had to name one of the most dangerous diseases in the world, then cancer certainly tops the list. As per WHO (World Health Organization), cancer is one of the leading causes of the death across the globe and in 2015 it was responsible for over 8 million deaths. There is no doubt that cancer is one condition that affects nearly every individual in some or the other way.
Does Cannabis Really Cure Cancer?
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to give any concrete answer to this question. Until now, there has been no available human and randomized clinical trials that suggest cannabis oil cures or any other cannabis treatment relieves cancer. Moreover, scientists have also faced various prohibitions when it comes to testing the plant on cancer patients. This means that there is no conclusive evidence that cannabis cures cancer.
However, the scientists have done some preclinical research. They have found that the cannabis compounds are really effective in killing cancer cells in the lab. As per informal reports, the patients have positive reviews when it comes to the effectiveness of the oil in the disease. Humans have a long history of its association with the cannabis plant. In fact, there is various archaeological evidence showing that the herb was used for treating cancers around 2, 000 years ago.
Back in 2014, researchers were able to diagnose breast cancer in the remains of a Siberian woman (preserved for more than two millennia in ice) using MRI scans.
In the laboratory models, cannabis compounds have shown positive results when it comes to killing malignant cells. Now, can we confirm that cannabis can quickly cure cancer? No, not at all. However, as per various informal reports along with preclinical data shows that that the herb is definitely something to be reckoned with.
Cancer is not just another health condition, and every person responds uniquely to different medications. However, with various positive rodent tests of cannabinoids for cancer permits human clinical trials.
Let us see different ways in which Cannabis oil kills cancer oils in the lab.
Programmed Cell Death
Unfortunately, cancerous cells are immortal in nature. For some reason, damaged cells stop responding to the immune signals of the human body. Usually, all those cells that are mutated, old, and damaged in some manner undergo a process of programmed cell death.
Programmed cell death really helps in the prevention of mutated cells from increasing and dividing. In cancer, this particular process stops. Over the past two decades, various researchers have revealed that cannabinoids such as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) activate programmed cell death in varied types of cancer.
When we talk about cannabis plant, THC is an essential and primary psychoactive. CBD is also a common cannabinoid and it also nonpsychoactive. THC is responsible for causing high, and CBD is helpful in calming things.
Looks like, particularly, cannabis compounds encourage a particular kind of programmed cell death known as “apoptosis”. Various studies also support similar findings in both animal and cell line models.
Stopping proliferation is also one of the ways in which cancer cells are killed by cannabis compounds. Since cancer cells don’t die on their own, the cells keep on growing and dividing. Furthermore, these cells are responsible for creating a tumor. Which can then hamper different functions of the human body. Both CBD and THC have antiproliferative effects. Scientific findings show that the cannabinoid treatment successfully ceases the growth of tumors in both cellular and rodent models.
In addition to significantly reducing the growth and division of the cancer cells. The cannabis compounds also tend to have anti-metastatic properties also. Once the cancer cell breaks off, a tumor tends to become metastatic. They further travel through the bloodstream and find a place in different parts of the human body. Scientists and physicians conclude that treating metastatic cancers is not an easy task.
Researching in both animal and cellular models show that both CBD and THC are anti-metastatic. Now, this actually shows that there is laboratory evidence proving that the cannabis can really help in the prevention of the tumors from spreading to one site to another.
There is a final way in which cannabis treatment kills the cancer cells i.e. “starvation.” If a tumor needs to grow, then it is imperative it has developed its own blood vessels to drain the nutrients and oxygen from the rest of the body. Angiogenesis is the term given to the process of developing blood cells.
As per various preclinical animal and cellular studies, both CBD and THC has proven beneficial in the prevention of tumors from developing blood vessels. Theoretically, this prohibits the access to the nutrition that would otherwise keep it alive and also prevents the tumor growth.
