7 Habits That are Damaging to Your Eyes

Just like you need to take care of your body and general health, you should make sure that you’re taking proper care of your eyes, too. Now, you may think that you’re doing everything you can for your eyes and your eyesight only because there doesn’t seem to be anything evident and concrete regarding regular eye care aside from maybe wearing prescription glasses or contacts, and using eye drops. However, there are many eye-damaging everyday habits that most people are not even aware of. Therefore, pay attention to the following list and try to break your bad eye habits as much as possible.

  1. Staring at gadget screens

Smartphones have become an integral part of today’s society but staring at the small screen too much, especially when you’re reading something, is not only bad for your eyes but can also cause dizziness and nausea. However, this is not just the case with small phone screens but your TV, computer, and tablet as well. The adverse effects are exceptionally active during the night before you go to sleep. The lighting changes can be really damaging to the eyes. Moreover, spending time in front of screens like that before bed can severely disrupt your sleep.

  1. Sleeping with contacts

It may be very tempting to fall asleep without taking your contacts out, especially when you’re tired. However, this unfortunate habit can cause various infections and irritations. Even if it’s bothersome, clean your hands and take out your contacts so that you can rest your eyes correctly as well.

  1. Makeup issues

Eye makeup is beautiful, but if you don’t use it correctly or don’t pay attention to the type of products you’re using on and around your eyes, you can experience severe eye irritations and damage. Be careful not to get any makeup in the eye when you’re applying it and opt for eye-safe products as well. Moreover, just like you shouldn’t sleep in contacts, you should never sleep in makeup either. Regularly doing this will make swollen eyes the least of your eye health problems.

  1. Not wearing your (sun)glasses

People who have to wear prescription glasses should wear them on a regular basis. It’s entirely okay to take them off once in a while but performing eye-strenuous activities when your vision is poor is only going to damage your sight and eye muscles more. Also, do your best to wear sunglasses when it’s really sunny outside. Squinting, which is your eyes’ natural response to vision difficulties due to the strong sun or bad vision, is also damaging to the eyes in the long run. What’s more, wearing proper glasses when necessary will reduce your headaches and dizziness as well.

  1. Rubbing your eyes

Sometimes, rubbing itchy eyes is the best feeling in the world. However, this seemingly innocent gesture that provides relief is one of the biggest reasons for irritated eyes and broken blood vessels. If your eyes feel itchy, try to avoid rubbing them and soothe them with a cold compress instead.

  1. Poor sleep schedules

Not getting enough sleep at night is one of the leading causes of various health issues. Depression, weight gain, and fatigue are only some of the problems that sleep deprivation can trigger. Eyestrain, blurred vision, dry and painful eyes are also common issues associated with the lack of sleep.

  1. Irregular visits the eye doctor

Try to make your visits to the eye doctor as regular as possible. Find a reliable Sydney optometrist who will explain just how vital proper checkups are, and who will be able to help out with any issues you may have. After all, eye doctors can help you eliminate poor vision but also notice signs of other potential health issues just by examining your eyes that may not have other apparent symptoms.

Of course, your diet can also be a crucial factor for proper eye health. In that respect, remember to stay hydrated and enrich your diet with vitamins such as C and E, zinc as well as omega-3 fatty acids.
