Elderly Health Hacks: How To Live Well Into Your Golden Years

As you age, it’s essential that you look after your general health. Neglect this area and your wellness levels will decline faster than you know. So, where should you start? Well, there are some relatively straightforward and useful health hacks you can try for yourself including:

Get extra support at home

Just as charity begins at home, so does look after your health. Before delving into workouts and nutrition, it’s crucial that you ensure you get the support you need at home. The loss of bone mass and bone density is natural with age. However, it increases the risk of sudden fracture and injury the older you get. Equally, your joints may start to become stiffer and less flexible over the years, negatively impacting your mobility levels. As this begins to take its toll on your body, it’s essential to invest in home accessories which can help prevent falls and simplify daily tasks like bathing and getting dressed.

Research is vital to choosing the support products which are right for you and your unique set of needs. For example, one of the tasks with which you may need help could be getting in and out of the bath. Equipment like grab bars, non-slip mats, and bath steps with handles can help keep you safe and support your weight and balance. Get regular cardio exercise

You’ve likely heard people say that you need to be more active, but what does that mean? Simply put, it means to get more exercise. The American Heart Association recommends that you get around ‘30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity’ for five of the seven days out of the week.

Partaking in regular cardio exercise has been proven to boost the strength of the heart muscle and improve circulation levels. These two benefits alone reduce your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, and strokes. This form of exercise could include aerobic classes, swimming laps, cycling, or jogging.

Take up a dance class

Building on that idea, you may want to sign yourself up for a dance class. Not only will this activity get you moving and your heart pumping, but it could also be beneficial for your mind. In fact, a recent study by Frontiers found that regular dancing could reverse the effects of aging on the brain. That means that as you learn some new moves, you could also be improving your balance and coordination skills. The very act of learning new routines and skills is a figurative workout for your brain and will keep it agile.

Since one of the many worries for older individuals is that they begin to lose their memory, this form of exercise is specific to appeal. You can live stream video tutorials to dance in the comfort of your own home. However, since there is a significant social aspect to this pastime, joining a local class or group at a nearby senior center or gym may be a better alternative.

Eat a Mediterranean diet

There’s a wealth of misinformation about the ‘right’ diet for older people. At times, it’s hard to know what you can trust and who you ought to believe. According to research from the European Food Information Council, however, opting for a Mediterranean diet could be one of your best options.

One study found that this type of diet decreased people’s levels of C-reactive protein; a significant marker in the aging process. The substance is produced by the liver when it is inflamed. Over the years, it has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and kidney disease. Decreasing this protein could potentially lower your risk of developing those conditions. Hence, choosing this dietary plan will help you stay and feel younger for longer.

Much of this diet consists of eating plant-based food groups. For example, you should use legumes, whole grains, and vegetables as the base of the majority of your meals. You should also decrease your meat consumption. Avoiding red meat entirely is always guaranteed to be a savvy move. You can get the same levels of protein from fish and white meat, such as chicken. Adopting this lifestyle could bolster your overall health and longevity.
