How to Considerably Reduce Noise Pollution at Home

One of the most often overlooked harmful factors in our environment is noise pollution. Research by W.H.O. shows that all over the globe, people suffer from the consequences of noise pollution. Whether it’s daytime noise or night-time high sound levels, they can significantly damage our health.

Noise pollution in the home is a terrible nuisance. It comes from different sources: garbage trucks, car or air traffic, noisy neighbors, lawn mowers and leaf blowers, barking dogs… Whatever it may be, it creates an annoying racket that disturbs the peace and quiet in our homes.

Uprooting and moving is not an option for many people, but the good news is that there are things we can do to reduce noise pollution in our homes by trying out several simple tips.

Mask the noise

There’s a saying that goes: Fight fire with fire! Surprisingly, something similar can be applied here too. It may sound like a paradox, but you can deal with noise by creating more noise! If you can’t eliminate the outside sounds, you can try and mask them with other more pleasant and calming sounds. One choice could be the white noise machine. It creates sounds on all audible frequencies but most people claim they don’t hear anything, neither the outside noise nor the device itself.

There is also another noise reducing devices. They function on the principle of a microphone that intercepts noises and sends counter signals to cancel the sound, such as smartphone apps or noise canceling headphones.

A more straightforward and cheaper option might be hanging wind chimes on your deck or patio or installing a water fountain in your yard. They create soothing and tranquil sounds that can block noises coming from the outside.

Windows retrofitting

Properly sealed windows constitute a significant factor not only in heat insulation but also in noise reduction. The advantage of retrofitting your windows is that it can be done quickly and with almost no hassle as you don’t have to replace the entire window. Double glazing improves soundproofing by creating a barrier between your home and the outside.

These windows have a layer of inert gas between them that also provides excellent thermal insulation, limit condensation and are air-tight which means less energy is used to heat up or cool down your home, so their energy efficiency is very high. Installing double glazed windows might appear expensive at first, but they do pay off, especially in the long term.

And if you have any doubts, individual professionals, as these Canberra-based experts for double-glazing windows, offer excellent solutions and high-quality service for all customers so you can get all the help and consultation you need.

Alterations in the home

By adding or changing some of the features you have inside your house, you can also reduce the effect of the outside noise. Let’s start with the floors. Hardwood floors look amazing, but they down muffle sounds. On the contrary, they make it echo throughout the house. By adding carpets or rugs, you can dampen the noise. Most common choices are thick, fuzzy top rugs and the ones with foam-rubber backing.

Another thing that can increase the echoing in your home is bare walls. Vast, empty walls will cause sounds to reverberate, but if you cover them with wall coverings such as large paintings or tapestries, they will absorb sounds and muffle the noise. If you live in a semi-detached home, it means you share one wall with your neighbors. Usually, it’s not a problem, and it adds to heat insulation in the winter, but if they’re noisy and like to play their music or TV really loud, then you’re in a bit of pickle. What can help here is blocking it with large pieces of furniture like large bookcases or wardrobe closets which will reduce the amount of audible noise coming through the wall.

In the end, the choice is up to you, and the range of options is extensive. It all depends on your budget and personal preference. Health comes first, and since noise pollution has been linked to stress, fatigue and hearing loss, anything you do will improve the quality of your life.
