4 Great Health Effects of Owning a Pet

It’s clear that your fur baby makes your life better in countless ways. They give us love, companionship, and joy. But did you know that owning a pet actually improves your health in scientifically advanced ways? Here are some proven health benefits of owning a pet you might not have known about.

They make our world brighter

Did you know statistics show that mental illness has turned into a full-blown worldwide epidemic? In fact, it is becoming so familiar, that the World Health Organization is predicting that by 2020 it will be the second most prevalent disease in the world. By 2030 it will likely replace heart disease as the most common disease in the world. And depression is just part of the problem. Other common mental health issues include anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, PTSD and many more. The good news in all this darkness is that pets, especially dogs can help you fight off mental health issues. If you are already suffering, they can help you cope. Research shows that pets can improve our mood, help us deal with stress and raise our serotonin and dopamine levels. The reasons are obvious. Our pets give us unconditional love, and their goofy behavior is sure to lift even the lowest of spirits.

They raise our immunity

You might not feel so grateful when your furry friend sheds all over your bed or tracks mud and who knows what else inside. But you should. It sounds counterintuitive, but to be healthy, we have to get a little dirty. Our immune system is able to protect us from pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and allergens only if it gets regularly exposed to them in small, reasonable doses. Studies show that children that come from families of pet owners are less likely to develop allergies and even asthma.

They heal our hearts

Probably due to their overall influence on our mental wellbeing, contact with animals also has a very beneficial effect on our cardiovascular system. Our blood pressure and pulse usually skyrocket in stressful situations. Since the presence of a pet lowers the impact and intensity of stress, our system is better able to cope. But that’s not the only reason. Dog owners get much more exercise, such as running or walking, only because their pet needs it. The American Heart Association suggests that owning a dog lowers your risk of heart attack, cholesterol, hypertension, and stroke.

They boost children’s development

Children who grow up in homes with pets experience a significant boost in growth. This is particularly noticeable with emotional development. Kids who live with pets generally grow up to have more empathy, better communication skills, and a greater sense of responsibility.

What about your pet’s health?

In a lot of respects, pets are like babies – cute, lovable, and a source of great joy. However, just like babies, they are also unable to tell us when something hurts or bothers them. That is why it’s important to take your furry friend to the vet for regular check-ups. There are also plenty of common issues that you should be on the lookout for and work to prevent them. For instance, larger dog breeds like Rottweilers, Great Danes, and German Shepherds, very often tend to develop joint problems, including hip dysplasia. Proper preventative measures, for instance, supplements like Sashas Blend, could lower your dog’s chances of encountering joint issues.

As if you could possibly love your fur babies more, now you have one more reason to add to the endless list. It’s good to know that, when you hug your pet after a particularly tough day, you’re not healing just figuratively, but literally too.
