Swimming Pool Water: How to Keep it Healthy and Clean

Creating a healthy swimming environment in your pool all year-round, devoid of any harmful chemicals, bacteria, and algae are of the utmost importance to ensure the health of your family and increase the pool’s lifespan as well. More often than not, people tend to neglect the water in their pool on a molecular level, only cleaning it with a net once a week.

Unfortunately, this is not enough to keep the water safe for swimming. Here are the best ways you can maintain a healthy water balance on a daily basis and create a clean and safe swimming environment your entire family can enjoy.

Clean and replace the filter cartridges

One of the healthiest habits you can introduce into your pool maintenance routine is regular filter cleaning. Cleaning the filter cartridges several times a week will ensure the water is safe for entry, however, during frequent use, it is recommended you replace the cartridges every five to seven days. Otherwise, replacing the cartridges every two weeks is enough to maintain water quality.

Use a chemical floater

A chemical floater is a nifty little pace of equipment aimed at making your life easier if you are short on time and can’t squeeze manual chlorination into your schedule. The chemical floater releases chlorine tablets into the water depending on the settings you choose and thus maintains the cleanliness of the swimming pool automatically. This option is especially handy when you’re away for prolonged periods of time.

Eliminate hard water

Mineral accumulation is entirely reasonable in environments where the water is stationary, yet it can be harmful to your health and should be dealt with promptly and regularly. Hard water leads not only to mineral accumulation that can damage your filter system and your pool pump, but it also leads to discoloration, ultimately leading to potential health hazards.

Among other swimming pool supplies you should always have at hand, you should also apply a high descaling agent once you notice debris settling in. It is also an excellent idea to invest in a pool vacuum to give your pool a thorough cleaning.

Use chlorine shock treatment

The chlorine shock treatment is usually unnecessary, mainly if you stick to a proper water maintenance schedule, however, sometimes discoloration, bacteria, mineral accumulation and algae can begin to form despite the rigorous upkeep.

If this does happen, then a chlorine shock treatment will be necessary. A chlorine shock is a simple process where you will add significant amounts of chlorine to the water (according to your pool size and the manufacturer’s instructions) to eliminate harmful bacteria and all of the symptoms above.

Be sure to pour chlorine granules evenly across the water surface, especially near the filter pump inlet and outlet. The chlorine levels will be too high at this point, so make sure nobody enters the water until the dip test indicates a balance between 1 and 3ppm. Remember to wear protective goggles and gloves as well.

Change the water altogether

Regular water maintenance should avoid the need to change the water entirely throughout the swimming season, especially if you introduce all of the solutions above. If nothing helps and you swimming pool merely is due for a water change, then it might be inevitable.

Water maintenance is not only more cost-effective than pumping new water in, but it is also beneficial for the health of your pool as well as the health of your family. If you do decide to replace the water in your pool when the time is right, be sure to use this opportunity to clean the pool surface thoroughly and conduct any necessary repairs.

Keeping the water in the pool safe for swimming is of the utmost importance in supporting the health of your family. Be sure to incorporate these tips into your maintenance schedule, and you will have no problem creating a swimming environment everyone will love.
