Natural Remedies For The Common Cold

It’s cold season which means that many of you may be sniffling away. Most adults tend to have between 2-3 colds each year, according to national statistics. These viruses tend to last a few days to weeks at a time, but is there any way that you can get rid of them faster? If you’re looking for an alternative to prescribed medication, don’t miss these simple, natural remedies that will help you along the way.

Ginger

Besides being a tasty spice, ginger root actually has a wealth of health-boosting properties that you may not have considered before now. For instance, there is a body of research which suggests that ginger has anti-inflammatory and pain relief properties.

When you’re suffering from a severe cold, try putting some freshly grated ginger in warm water and drinking it with a little lemon. You may find both pain relief and a reduction in inflammation. You can also try consuming ginger by cooking with fresh ginger root, eating crystallized ginger from the store, or trying ginger tea.

Eucalyptus Oil

When you have a cold, one of the most irritating side effects has to be the fact that your nose gets severely blocked. Fighting that congestion may prove difficult unless you have one secret ingredient. Breathing in the fumes from eucalyptus oil can help to loosen the phlegm in your nasal passage, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

They also suggest gargling with a mixture of oil and water to relieve any throat pain that you may be experiencing. Be sure to spit out the mixture afterward, however, as ingesting or swallowing eucalyptus oil can be dangerous.

Honey

If you find that you are coughing and spluttering as a side effect of your cold, you may wish to give honey a shot. Honey is a low-cost alternative to traditional cough medication, and according to a report from the Mayo Clinic, it may help to suppress excessive coughing.

Should you have a sweet-tooth, you may wish to take a spoonful of honey before bed (which could also help you sleep). Many people enjoy drinking hot honey and lemon drinks when they are suffering from a cold too, or adding honey to their daily cup of tea.

Apple Cider Vinegar

As you may have already heard, apple cider vinegar offers loads of health benefits. The solution helps to add healthy probiotics to your gut and facilitate an alkaline environment which is key to preparing your immune system to fight off cold viruses. As though that weren’t enough, apple cider vinegar has also been shown to thin down congestive mucus and phlegm.

Of course, this type of vinegar has a pretty nasty, acidic taste and should be mixed with a glass of warm water before drinking. While it may not be the most beautiful experience in the world, it could help you to rid yourself of a nasty cold sooner rather than later.

Rest!

Monitoring cold symptoms like fever, sore throat and runny nose is a must for treating the virus early and efficiently. You can quickly identify severe fever using a thermometer at home, and it’s important to give your body rest for the duration of your illness. While your immune system is fighting off a virus, it takes up a wealth of energy. Keeping warm and getting lots of sleep could be the answer to a speedy and smooth recovery.
