Choose the Best Eye Care Expert for Better Vision

Who Is an Optometrist?

Human eyes have complex structures made up of the cornea, iris, pupils, lens, and optic nerves. They help you with clear vision and expression of thoughts, emotions, and desires. The protective eyelids do not obstruct vision and protect the eyeballs, so people depend on shades or sunglasses. The human vision changes with age, disease, or genes, and hence requires inspection by an optometrist specialist who performs an ocular study to diagnose any vision-related disorders.

They are well equipped for conducting a wide range of superficial eye tests.

  1. Qualification – Graduates and postgraduates with related skills practice this profession. They complete optometry courses and receive vision science certification. Licensed practitioners who are members of optometry boards are more reliable and should be approached.
  2. Service – They examine the eye health, visual condition, ocular degeneration, and systemic decay. Patients are prescribed eye drops; lenses, optical aids, and therapy based on the severity of the problem by the optometrist specialists who are certified to handle vision problems and ocular pain.
  3. Skills – Registered experts have technical knowledge of biology and physiology. Their medical skills are ably assisted by specialized tools. They are also friendly, precise, compassionate and communicative by nature.

Healthcare professionals who work in allied fields have unique and localized talent. The optometric expert focuses on eye-related health. A primary or comprehensive eye test is performed by an optometrist specialist with the help of diagnostic equipment for measuring the vision or detecting any flaws. Many techniques and tools are part of these specialized services. The patients are going through various tests in a private office room with alphabet charts, slit lamps, chairs, and stools during their treatment.

Opticians are lens cutters and fitters, while an ophthalmologist is a certified eye surgeon. An optometry expert is not qualified to diagnose or treat complex medical conditions. They deal with minor eye related problem and mostly dependent on such vision tools. Have a look at some tools used by an Optometrist during treatment

  1. Phoropter/Phoropter – It is a necessary instrument for measuring refractive error in both eyes. The patient looks through the lens at a chart with numbers and letters. These lenses are frequently changed to ascertain visual clarity or aberrations.
  2. Retinal Camera – It takes pictures of the back of the eye and retina with a bright flash. Eye diseases can be detected and documented with greater precision.
  3. Autorefractor – An automated phoropter replacement that measures light entering the eye. Patients rest their chin and look at changing pictures without any feedback.
  4. Slit Lamp- A light enabled microscope for closer examination of the whole eye.
  5. Tonometer, Retinoscope, etc., – Glaucoma and retina examiners that are not frequently used by an optometrist as these are often used by ophthalmologists for eye disease detection.
