Common sleep disorders and their treatment

Are you having trouble with sleeping? You’re definitely not alone, as millions of people world over face this problem. The worst part is, age and sex have nothing to do with sleep issues. Anyone can come under the grip of sleep problems of one or another form. Even if you didn’t pre-empt the issue, it would be a mistake not to seek treatment for a long-term and chronic sleep disorder. Because some of them can pose grave risks to the body and jeopardize your overall health. So, first know those sleep disorders and then seek timely medical assistance for them.   

Let’s look at 5 common sleep disorders

  1. Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

Have you lately been feeling sensation due to pains and aches in your legs? Does this problem make it difficult to sleep? Well, you may be suffering from a common sleep disorder, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), which is characterized by a great urge to move your legs. If this problem grips you, you will not feel better unless you shook your legs and walked around. Some of the typical symptoms of RLS include daytime sleepiness, drowsiness, irritability and lack of concentration. Rest or sitting for a long time, particularly at night, at cause this problem.    

  1. Narcolepsy

Do you experience excessive daytime sleepiness? Or, have you feeling falling asleep lately while driving, eating or speaking? And even if all this happens after you have a full night sleep, it’s time to consult your doctor as you may be suffering from narcolepsy. It’s basically a neurological disorder where patients lose control over their wakefulness and control. Even if you sleep a regular routine, you will fail to control when to sleep. The worst part obviously is its being age and gender-neutral, so it can affect anyone, ever. So, don’t ignore your daytime sleepiness and seek immediate treatment.  

  1. Insomnia

Are you waking too early in the morning lately? Or, have you been finding it difficult to fall asleep? Is your problem accompanied by low energy or chronic fatigue? And if your sleep does not feel as refreshing as it once did or if you find it tough staying asleep, you are suffering from insomnia. You have a disorder where you are unable to fall asleep or stay asleep. Insomnia can be temporary sometimes, lasting from a few nights to weeks, or permanent in nature. It may also be caused by psychiatric or medical conditions. 

  1. Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a severe disorder where one can stop breathing in their sleep. This problem strikes due to lack of proper oxygen supply to the brain, and subsequently to the whole body. The airway blockage during sleep is the reason behind obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) while central sleep apnea (CSA) happens when the brain fails to aid in breathing. Both types are dangerous and come with a variety of health risks including heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and digestive problems. Sleep apnea is a problem you need to get treated at the earliest to stay healthy and keep risks away. 

  1. Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Bruxism is a common sleep problem characterized by grinding of teeth during sleep. Stress and anxiety are considered the primary causes of this problem. Headaches and sore jaw in the morning are some of the typical symptoms of bruxism. You can consult a sleep specialist long island NY and get mouth guard fitted to treat teeth grinding.
