Finding Freedom From Depression Through Art

Treating depression can be challenging. For those who have experienced it, sometimes even the simplest things such as getting out of bed, doing shopping or housework can be an impossible mission. While we can treat depression with medications and talk therapy, there are other solutions too. For years, we have known that art has healing and therapeutic power, which is confirmed by many artists around the world. It is a unique approach to dealing with depression when it is used along with other forms of treatment. Fortunately, this unconventional method is becoming more and more popular as we see what invaluable benefits it brings to people who suffer from depression. Sydney is a thriving city when it comes to art therapy and its application.

We express more than words through art

There is no doubt that talk therapy is adequate, but it is difficult sometimes to open up to a stranger or to find the right words to express our feelings and thoughts. Often, we suppress our feelings because we are taught that it is the right thing to do. Art therapy doesn’t always require words. Something is liberating in transferring your emotions on to a blank canvas or a piece of paper. Through art and creative expression, you get in touch with your inner self and your feelings. For someone with depression, this could be the way of breaking barriers, which are blocking psychotherapy. Sydney offers you various forms of art therapy, which can help you open your mind to new possibilities.

Types of art therapy

Art therapy can be individual, couples, family, and group, and you can equally benefit from each of these. In Sydney, you can find many useful art therapy sessions, where you can find different types of creative therapy. There are many forms of art therapy such as sculpting, acting, playing and listening to music, dancing, but the most common way is panting and drawing. Painting is not just for artists, people of all ages can enjoy and benefit from this type of therapy. You can easily find companies that provide canvas stretching in Sydney and get started. It is a form of communication between you and your emotions. All these forms of art therapy are creating a healing force, which can bring you a lot of benefits. It releases brain chemicals, which make you feel happy and you get a sense of accomplishment and self-sufficiency. It is advisable to do these activities under the guidance of a trained therapist to make the most of the treatment and enhance it.

Creation beats destruction

Depression is a form of damage to your emotions, joy, the meaning of your life and your sense of self. You feel helpless and lonely. On the other hand, art therapy represents an opportunity to break that cycle of destruction and immerse yourself in creation. Through art, you create new emotions, happiness, and beauty. According to research, when we watch something that we believe is beautiful, our brain releases dopamine – the hormone of happiness. This positive effect is even more significant when you know that you have made that beautiful art. The process of creating art is the process of discovering yourself, your wishes, dreams, the things that you need to get where you want to be. Many people even discover hidden talents and give their life a new meaning. In other words, you get a product from which you can learn about yourself and change. Although therapists have known about the healing ability of creative therapy for years, it is only recently that research studies have started supporting its use.

Art therapy is proven to be a beneficial method of treating depression. It breaks your dysfunctional patterns of negative thought, creates an excellent coping mechanism and enhances your problem-solving skills. Rather than focusing on the illness, art therapy takes a holistic approach of battling against depression, which helps you restore your life.
