 Gum Surgery- What Do I Need to Know?

Gum disease is caused by bacteria that lies between the teeth and gum and unable to remove by the regular brushing teeth. The first stage of gum disease is known gingivitis, in which gums become red and bleed easily. The bleeding is the first sign of gum disease, if you don’t treat it in the early stage it can travel below your gum line and into your bone then it reaches to the severe stage which is known as periodontitis. 

Symptoms of Gum Disease:

  • Teeth loss.
  • Plaque and yellow stain.
  • Sensitive teeth.
  • Swollen red teeth.
  • Gum that recedes and moves away from the tooth.
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Wiggly or shifting teeth.

Types of Gum Surgery:

  • Gingivectomy: The dental surgeon conduct this procedure to remove the extra gum that may be overgrown on the teeth and provide a better area to clean the teeth. It is one of the most common procedures performed with a laser. In this surgery, a local anesthetic used to keep the patient comfortable. After the operation completed, a surgical dressing, or pack is placed around the teeth and gums for one week.
  • Gingivoplasty: This procedure is used to reshape the gum tissues around the teeth. The gingivoplasty is similar to gingivectomy, but the objective is different. This surgery only removes the partial remove the gum section and gingivectomy removes the entire portion of a gum section.

Preparing for the Gum Surgery:

Before a person has a gum surgery, a dental surgeon will do some pre-operation check up to make sure that a person is in good condition for the operation or not.

  • Take a medical history of a patient and review it. ‘
  • Examine teeth, throat, and jaw to check the stability and health.
  • Share all the details about the surgery like cost, side effects, benefits, and procedure.
  • Check blood pressure and sugar.

Recovery:

The dental surgeon will provide you the protocols that you have to follow after surgery. To get recover as soon as possible, all you need is to do just follow the protocols appropriately. Typically, the dentist will prescribe you pain relief medicines, medicated toothpaste, and mouth wash. In the days after gum surgery avoid scorching and cold foods and beverage. Cut it off sugar and sticky food products from your diet and stop smoking. These food products are the primary cause of soreness, discomfort, and pain. If you follow all the instructions of the dentist sincerely, your teeth will become brighter, stronger and healthier.
