Health Complications Caused by Back Pain

Any type of chronic pain can significantly affect one’s life, but chronic back pain is often the worst. It’s not only excruciating but can also bring with it some other health issues. Health complications caused by back pain can be both physical and physiological, so to battle them, you first need to get to know them.

Depression

Since back pain prevents you from enjoying various activities, it can trigger depression. It makes performing daily activities and spending time in the gym very hard, but chronic pain also causes mood changes that can alienate people from their loved ones. This also leads to depression and anxiety. As these mental health issues set in, they can make a recovery and rehabilitation much harder and even prevent the person from seeking treatment. And if you count in the stress of treatment or surgery, it’s easy to see why people who suffer from back pain develop depression.

Insomnia

It’s an understatement to say that persistent pain can disrupt your life. It can affect everything from mobility to your sleep patterns, and patients with chronic back pain often end up suffering from insomnia. Sleep deprivation is not only uncomfortable and irritating, but it can also bring about various health concerns like the weakened immune system, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and other.

Nerve damage

One of the most common health issues caused by back pain (usually from slipped or herniated disc) is nerve damage. The displaced disk puts pressure on the spinal nerves that cause damage and bring a world of pain and weakness in affected areas. The nerve that usually gets affected by compression is the sciatic nerve. It runs from the lower back all the way down the leg, and its damage can cause back pain, hip pain, leg tingling, shooting pain, weakness, and numbness of the limb and foot. So, if you notice any of these symptoms, seek treatment to stop the issue from advancing and don’t avoid surgery. The modern medicine has improved so much in recent years that surgeons like Dr. Timothy Steel can make the entire process quick, painless and efficient.  Experts conduct various types of spinal surgery thousands of times in their careers, so there’s really nothing to worry about.

Hormonal issues

Persistent pain that’s uncontrolled and untreated can affect fundamentally every endocrine system in the human body. Severe pain often gets accompanied by high blood pressure and rapid heart rate that is definitely not healthy. This might be triggered by excess catecholamine and glucocorticoid, but the insulin and lipid metabolism might also be altered. All in all, cardiovascular death is quite a common occurrence in people who suffer from persistent pain.

Weight gain

Being in pain prevents many people from engaging in any sort of physical activity. It prevents regular exercise and various daily activities that make a considerable part of a healthy lifestyle. Limited mobility due to pain will cause people to lose muscle mass and put on weight. Extra weight is not only unhealthy for various organs, but it also creates lousy posture which causes multiple health issues and worsens back pain.

Overuse syndrome

One sore point on the body can readily spring many others. This usually stems from the “overload and overuse syndrome” that’s caused by compensation. For instance, if you experience pain in your hip due to sciatic nerve damage, you might overuse the other hip and cause additional issues. Often, people who suffer from chronic pain develop a secondary pain site that gets much worse in time.

Chronic pain should never be left untreated. There are so many parts of your life that can be affected by it from your general health to your relationships. So, make sure to seek professional help, stick to your therapy and practice good habits for prevention.
