Tips For Dealing With Neck Pain In Winters

Cold weather can take a toll on both your mental and physical health, therefore; it’s essential that you take necessary measures to keep yourself happy and energetic during winters. When we talk about the impact of cold weather on your health, we are not only indicating winter blues but some serious problems that can prevent you from performing the activities of daily living with comfort.

Conditions like neck pain and shoulder pain are some of those problems that people experience a lot during the cold weather, apart from stress and seasonal depression.

Caused by factors like nerve compression, arthritis, worn joints, muscle strains, and injuries, neck pain is one of the most common problems that affect a wide range of people in the US.

According to FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers, “Nearly one-third of Americans suffer from neck pain every year, especially individuals in the 30-to-50 age bracket.” Also known as cervical pain, the neck pain usually stems from problems associated with the cervical spine, a highly complex structure made up of seven vertebrae.

The cervical spine is one of the most flexible parts of the spine, which allow the neck to perform different types of movements. However, the complexity of the cervical spine also makes it vulnerable to pain.

Irrespective of why you experience pain in your neck, it can worsen further in the winter season, if you do not take the appropriate steps.

So, if you are already experiencing severe pain in your neck, which is also accompanied by problems like a headache, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Here is what you need to do to manage neck pain in the winter season.

Seek Physical Therapy

Seeking physical therapy from an experienced physical therapist is one of the best ways to deal with your problem. If the pain in your neck is making it difficult for you to gaze up and down, or it’s hampering your sleep, then you can’t afford to ignore it anymore. If it continues, it won’t allow you to concentrate on the activities of daily living.

However, if you see a physical therapist immediately after you start experiencing the signs and symptoms of neck pain, you can see a lot of improvement in the reduction of pain very soon.

Addressing the underlying cause of neck pain is vital to treat it effectively. And the reason most people opt for physical therapy is that their therapist devotes enough time to identify the actual source of their pain.

So, whether you are having neck pain due to a herniated disc, osteoarthritis, or sports injuries, your therapist will design a personalized care plan to address the actual cause of your problem.

Depending on the severity of your neck pain, they will use the most effective physical therapy technique to relieve it.

They generally use techniques like Kinesio Taping, cupping, dry needling, massage therapy, and manual therapy.

Keep Your Body Hydrated

Everyone knows that drinking water is highly useful for maintaining a healthy body. But not everyone is aware of the fact that it’s especially essential for maintaining spine health.

Your spine requires an adequate amount of water to function effectively. To maintain proper disc height between the vertebrae, it’s essential that the discs receive a sufficient amount of water. Apart from that, water also helps in maintaining spinal alignment.

So, if you want to improve the health of your cervical spine and reduce the pain that stems from the conditions related to it, make sure that you up your water intake.

Water also helps in flushing out toxins from your body, improves brain health, promotes weight loss, and boosts the immune system.

Swim in Warm Water Pool

Swimming in warm water is very good for your neck health. The therapeutic properties of warm water help in minimizing inflammation, apart from relieving pain. It is also useful for easing neck stiffness.

Apart from that, swimming helps in reducing stress, improves heart health, enhances endurance, strengthens muscles, and makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

Correct Your Posture

Neck pain can also stem from poor posture, therefore; it’s essential that you take appropriate steps to correct it. It stems from prolonged sitting, slouching in a chair, wearing heels, and injuries, etc.

You can correct your posture by embracing the right sitting, standing, and sleeping positions. For example, when you sit in a chair, you should always keep your back straight, and your feet flat on the floor. It will not only help in enhancing your spine health but will also improve your productivity.

While standing, make sure that you keep your head straight and avoid putting too much pressure on your hip.

Similarly, if you want to enjoy a good night’s sleep, you should try sleeping on your back. However, if you are not used to it, you can lie on your side, but you need to use a pillow between your legs.

Apart from that, you should use comfortable shoes and replace your office chair if it’s uncomfortable.

Use Winter Wear

Since cold weather can worsen your pain, it’s vital for you to protect your body by using winter wear. Use high neck jackets, quality sweaters, woolen gloves, and thick socks to protect your body from freezing weather.

Apart from that, you should enhance the intake of anti-inflammatory foods and use a quality pillow that offers proper support to your neck and head.
