Smart Green Improvements for a Truly Healthy Bathroom

In these modern times when we are becoming painfully aware of the depletion of Earth’s resources, the climate change, and water shortage, we need to educate ourselves in the ways of growing as energy-efficient as possible. Therefore, green improvements have become an integral part of our home designs, covering all rooms in the house, primarily focusing on kitchens and bathrooms.

Having an energy-efficient and eco-friendly bathroom isn’t only crucial to our overall health but also for the preservation of our environment. Here are some ideas you can incorporate into your bathroom design to make it both more functional and healthier at the same time.

Green Improvements

Switch to organic products

The first and most natural step in moving towards a greener bathroom is switching from commercial toiletries to natural products. Their main advantage is that they don’t contain any artificial chemicals and preservatives but still clean your body excellently and smell wonderful. You can buy more significant quantities, stock them in vintage glass jars and keep them open so their gorgeous smell can permeate the entire room.

Take the same approach regarding bathroom cleaning products. Instead of using store-bought products that contain harsh chemicals, opt for good old vinegar and baking soda, mixed with water and some essential oils. They’re instrumental in cleaning both mold and soap scum. As a preventive measure against mold, keep at hand a spray bottle of water with tea tree essential oil and spray the shower daily.

Introduce nature into space

Nothing speaks green better than nature itself, so try to incorporate natural elements into your bathroom design. Bring in plants that need a lot of humidity to thrive, add a vase with flowers or decorative branches, install a floating shelf made of reclaimed wood and pack your cosmetic products in little-woven wicker baskets. All of these elements are inexpensive and will add an earthy element to the room.

Get rid of PVC

Typical bathroom shower curtains are made of PVC, which is an artificial material that contains various carcinogens and toxins that can compromise your health. The best option is to get rid of it, or if you must have it, switch to a safer plastic product called PEVA. It’s PVC and chlorine free and biodegradable. Other earth-friendly materials available are cotton, hemp or linen.

For a lot of people, the best way to go is to install a glass shower door, especially since now there’s an excellent choice of contemporary frameless shower screens that can elevate your bathroom look to a whole new level. They don’t only add a touch of modern elegance, but are a much more kid-friendly option to plain shower curtains and are a much greener alternative to any plastic product. They last longer and can be cleaned much more accessible to prevent any mold or mildew build-up. With all the advantages in mind, their initial higher cost pays off in the long run.

Get rid of PVC

Save water

In general, bathrooms consume a lot of water and energy on a daily basis, so your primary goal should be to reduce that to be more efficient. Start by limiting the time you spend in the shower and by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth. In addition to these two natural water-saving habits, if you can invest more time and money, install low-flow faucets and showerheads.

Standard commercial shower heads have a flow rate of about 10 liters per minute, while high-efficient models reduce that amount by half or more. The newest water-saving fixtures can maintain the water pressure without compromising the comfort and quality of your showering.

Similar to water-efficient showerheads, you can also install water-saving faucets with individual aerators that that are designed to keep a constant and robust water pressure while reducing the flow rate at the same time.

By incorporating these smart techniques, you’ll be able to reduce the amount of water consumption in your bathroom, convert it into a stylish retreat and lead a life that is healthier and more eco-friendly.
