Be the Eagle, Not the Kite: A Lesson on Success and Independence

Today, while teaching, I found myself in an unexpected yet meaningful dialogue with one of my students about success and the importance of studying hard. He asked me why some people seem to rise to the top of their field while others struggle to gain recognition. His question sparked a conversation that led me to share a metaphor that I believe encapsulates the essence of personal growth:

The Eagle: A Symbol of Mastery and Purpose

The eagle is a master of the skies. It does not wait for the wind to guide its flight, nor does it depend on others to determine its direction. Instead, it spreads its wings, soars with strength, and chooses its own path. When an eagle hunts, it does so with precision, focus, and strategy. It does not leave its survival to chance.

Likewise, those who strive to be the best in their field must embody the mindset of an eagle. Excellence is not handed to us—it is pursued relentlessly. It requires discipline, effort, and the willingness to face challenges head-on. The eagle does not fear the storm; in fact, it uses the wind’s force to climb even higher.

The Kite: A Symbol of Dependence and Uncertainty

On the other hand, a kite can only fly when the wind allows it. It is at the mercy of external forces, dragged along by the gusts of air or the pull of a string held by someone else. The kite has no control over its own movement—it cannot determine its direction or elevation. Its flight is dictated by circumstances beyond its control.

Many people, unfortunately, live like kites. They wait for opportunities instead of creating them. They let the opinions of others, the environment, or random events dictate their progress. They move wherever the wind blows, never taking full ownership of their journey.

Which One Will You Be?

I told my student: “If you want to be the best in your field, if you want to reach the top, you must be the eagle—not the kite.”

Study hard, master your craft, and take ownership of your growth. Don’t wait for perfect conditions. Don’t depend on luck or external validation. Success comes to those who seek it, work for it, and refuse to let distractions pull them off course.

An eagle doesn’t settle for mediocrity—it rises above.

A kite, no matter how high it flies, is always at the mercy of forces beyond its control.

So, to every student, dreamer, and ambitious individual reading this: Choose to be the eagle. Control your flight, define your purpose, and soar beyond limits.

Your future is in your hands. Fly with intention.
